- Take promising 10x12 room on the second floor of a ninetysomething-year-old house.
- Rip out unpromising, paint-stained wall-to-wall carpet and discover even less promising tongue-and-groove fir and structural repairs of uncertain providence.
- Sigh heavily and take a couple of measurements.
- Over a period of four years, dismantle subfloor in sections; reinforce and level joists; create new subfloor with ¾" plywood, one 2'x4' section at a time.
- Paint the plywood.

- Pop open a bottle of mead and sigh heavily... This time in satisfaction.
...Because I now have somewhere solid to stand while I'm doing those renovations.
